Using the rings with images

Introduction

You can use the rings to add visual interest. By arranging the rings over photos, you not only create a recognisable visual identity but also add extra visual depth and focus.

The rings are optional. If you do use them, you can do so in several ways:

  • As a layer: Place the ring over your image.
  • As a mask: Use the ring to highlight part of your photo.
  • As a collage: Combine multiple photos.

Rings as a layer

You can place the rings as a layer over a photo to bring focus to part of the image.

Tips:

  • To create more dynamic and interesting compositions, place the rings off-centre.
  • Position the rings so they frame the most important part of the photo.
  • Ensure there is sufficient contrast between the white lines of the rings and the background.

Try placing an element from the photo (such as a hand, object or part of a person) in front of the rings. This creates a sense of depth and makes the design more lively.

Rings as a mask

You can also use the rings as a mask. This involves placing an image within the rings, with the shape of the rings determining the image crop. You can leave the area outside the rings empty or fill it with a background colour.

For a more dynamic design, try placing part of the image outside the mask. This breaks through the frame created by the rings, adding depth and making it seem as if the subject is emerging from the image. Use this method to add focus or tell a story.

Rings as a collage

The rings can also be used to create a collage. This involves filling the ring-shaped areas between the lines with different images. Together, these images form a coherent visual story or highlight aspects of a subject, such as a researcher and their research.

Use sparingly

This creates a rich and complex image. Due to its high visual impact, we only use it for high-impact communication materials, such as:

  • Large formats, such as posters or exhibition stands.
  • Covers of important publications, such as annual reports or strategic plans.
  • Campaigns for special events, such as anniversarys or open days.
