PowerPoint templates: tips & tricks

Read about how to edit images within arc elements and how to replace logos on title slides.

Using the English university logo

By default, the title slides contain the Dutch logo in the droplet. If you want to use the English logo, you only need to change this in one place. The change will automatically be applied to all title slides in your presentation.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the ribbon menu, go to View > Slide Master, or press Alt + V + F.
  2. In the left pane, click the top slide master thumbnail. This thumbnail is slightly larger than the ones below and consists of a light‑grey background with the university logo in the lower‑left corner.
  3. Right‑click the logo on the slide.
  4. In the context menu, select Send to Background.
  5. The English‑language logo will now appear. Repeat steps 3–5 to switch back to the Dutch logo.
  6. At the top of the ribbon, click Close Master View.

Using a faculty logo instead of the university logo

  1. In the ribbon menu, go to View > Slide Master, or press Alt + V + F.
  2. In the left pane, click the top slide master thumbnail. This slide consists of a light‑grey background with the university logo in the lower‑left corner.
  3. Draw a white shape without an outline that covers the existing logo, without overlapping the droplet.
  4. Insert the faculty logo (PNG format with a transparent background) and position it within the droplet.
  5. At the top of the ribbon, click Close Master View.

Multiple logos on a title slide

Use the Multiple logos slide to display logos from other partners in addition to the university logo. Use one or both of the image placeholders provided for this purpose.

If necessary, slightly reposition a logo horizontally or vertically to align it correctly with the university logo.

Logo too large?

If you've inserted a logo image and it is being cropped by the edges of the frame, double‑click the logo and click the lower half of the Crop button. Then select Fit.

Changing the background of a title slide

  1. Right‑click the slide and select Format Background.
  2. In the panel on the right, choose Picture or texture fill.
  3. Click Insert.
  4. Select From a File.
  5. Browse to the desired image (this must be 1920 × 1080 pixels), select it and click Open.

Moving an image within an arc element

Sometimes an image placed inside an arc element does not align perfectly. Follow these steps to adjust the image within the shape:

  1. Double‑click the arc element.
  2. In the ribbon, click Crop.
  3. You can now move the image by clicking and holding it in the centre (the cursor changes to four arrows) and dragging it to the desired position.
Hold the Shift key while dragging to prevent the image from moving up or down.

Do not use the arrow keys on your keyboard to reposition the image, as this will move the entire shape instead.

Replacing an image within an arc element

If you have placed an image in an arc element and want to replace it with another image, proceed as follows:

  1. Right‑click the image.
  2. Select Change Picture from the context menu and then This Device.
  3. Browse to the desired image on your computer and select it.

Reducing the file size of a presentation

A PowerPoint presentation with many images can quickly become quite large. To reduce the file size, you can adjust PowerPoint’s image compression settings.

  1. Click File in the menu.
  2. Select Options at the bottom of the left pane.
  3. In the window that opens, go to Advanced.
  4. Under Image Size and Quality, uncheck Do not compress images in file.
  5. Set Default Resolution to 330 ppi.

Remove unnecessary image data

To save space, you can have PowerPoint permanently remove parts of images in arc elements that are not actually used in the presentation. You can apply this per image or to all images in the presentation.

  1. Double‑click one of the images in the presentation.
  2. In the ribbon, click Compress Pictures.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, choose whether to compress all images or only the selected image.
  4. Check Delete cropped areas of pictures.
